A Missoula man is heartbroken and angry after a day of cross-country skiing with his malamute dogs near Lolo Pass turned into his worst nightmare Sunday afternoon.

Layne Spence was skiing with his three dogs on a quiet logging road in Lee Creek when, according to Spence, a rifle shot echoed through the air.

Then, Spence saw his 2-year-old brown and white dog, “Little Dave,” fall down with a shot to a leg.

About 15 yards away from him and his dogs, Spence saw a man in camouflage holding an assault weapon.

“I started screaming ‘Stop, stop,’ and the man kept shooting,” said Spence, 48, and who is often seen walking his dogs around Missoula’s river front. “And he kept shooting.”

“My dog is lying there, dead and I shouted ‘What are you doing?’ and the guy said, ‘I thought it was a wolf.’ ”

After the man allegedly shot Spence’s dog six times, he took off without another word, leaving Spence to deal with the tragedy of his dead dog.

Spence abandoned his skiing gear to carry Little Dave out, and to get his other two malamutes, Frank and Rex, to the safety of his truck.

When he got back to Missoula, Spence filed a report with the Missoula County Sheriff’s Department.

“This doesn’t have to happen,” said an obviously distraught Spence. “Not every big dog is a wolf. These are pets, they all had their collars and lights on, they were all with me the entire time.

“People need to know what a wolf looks like before they start shooting,” he said. “And I was standing right there.

“What if I had a child on a sled, what would have happened if a bullet ricocheted?”

“There are other people who use the woods besides hunters this time of year.”

The incident remains under investigation by the Missoula Sheriff’s Department.

Anyone who has information about the shooting is asked to call Crimestoppers at721-4444.

  1. An honest man would have admitted his wrongdoing and stayed where he was; a better man would not have been shooting a wolf in the first place. Shooting so many times draws the consideration that not only did this man want to kill a wolf, he was the type to want to make him/her suffer.

  2. Two things I wonder:
    – what the f**k kind of moron needs an AR15 to go hunting?
    – did this a**hole have a wolf tag in the first place?

I hope someone knows who this guy is and turns him in. I’ll be the first to pledge $100 bucks reward for any tips that lead to his capture and conviction.

    • This comment is why Montana has the dubious distinction of being culturally retarded

Because the guy was in camo and had an “assault rifle” that makes him a hunter? No orange, no other hunting gear?…..I don’t know many hunters that go out without a pack. I believe this was an assumption on his part, so let me make an assumption of my own. He is an ARA member and thinks hunting wolves is wrong. Goes down to the local pound grabs a dog and takes it out and shoots it himself. Creates a bunch of media hype to support his cause.”

  4. Someone needs to start a reward fund …I would, but I’ve got one going for the illegally killed mother grizzly with 3 cubs
We seem to be living here “under seige”, between the general killing season, the extended wolf season and the upcoming trapping season…..This situation is out of control and I wish someone would write an article for a national magazine on “what it’s like to live here and recreate with your dogs”

    • …with land mines and snipers all around. And people shooting at ground squirrels in suburban neighborhoods. This isn’t the first dog mistaken for a wolf this year in Montana (but lets hope it’s the last). And what must it be like to be a wolf living in the state?

      • We need to start ”Take back the Woods” and take back the right to recreatonal use not hunting, most of the time. And stop wolf hunting permanently!
I think the cowardly dog killer is not on his first dog or his first beer? If it was my dog, that maggot’s ass would look like swiss cheese!

  5. I am sitting with tears what did her think he was shooting a malamute is a dog looks like a dog barks I just do not get it. No brains for this. Guy. He needs therapy. His weapons taken before human is next. Told no more weapons for you they are serious you just killed someone’s pet not watch dog. PET!

  6. Some folks think they qualify as hunters because they carry an assault gun and have to pepper the countryside with bullets to hunt prey. They need this unfair advantage because they are so much dumber than the four legged animal they are trying to murder.
