Unsustainable Human Activities: Loss of ecosystem services and the web of life that supports us

“I do not think we in any way should feel complacent that we are not on the list of possible extinctions.” ~ Richard Leakey, paleontologist

Every day that passes the world is in worse shape.

Humans are in the process of destroying more species on earth in this 100 years than have gone extinct in the past 65 million years. We hear overwhelming statistics and we dissociate. Earth is in human-caused crisis on almost every level – overpopulation of humans doing the wrong things in energy and mining extraction, poisoned and genetically altered food supplies, accelerating climate change, and destroying biodiversity to a tipping point of collapse.

Politics operates within the framework that humans are the lords of creation, and all life and the natural world are just a commodity for our abuse and…

  1. The anthropocene extinction, It is denial, also ignorance and indifference and thinking errors. Most people are unaware and/or do not care that humans kill around 27 million animals daily for consumption. Many “religious” people see themselves as sentient beings and animals as not and themselves as created in the image of God and animals as not. They are stewards of the land and of the fishes and the animals. Animals to them are for consumption and recreational killing opportunities. Most people are very self-centered thinkers, concerned only with their families, what’s for dinner, what is on the agenda for the weekend. They are generally low information voters, not all their fault though because the news media is generally low information providers. The dollar rules so much of what humans do and we rationalize what we want to do in the name of making a buck. We humans are an earth disease in that we are animal farming, encroaching on the remnants of wilderness and wildlife, all in an unsustainable way as we destroy wildlife on land and sea, have most flora and fauna threatened or endangered and pollute the environment and continue to increase our own populations to the seams of the earth. Humans do not seem to be able to help themselves or the other animals of the earth as the March of Civilization is marching all toward the anthropocene extinction. It is not an abstract occurrence in the far off distant future. It is happening right now.

    • This is all so true, Roger, and the sooner humans release their death grip on the planet, the sooner it can start it’s healing process. As for the point that, “Many “religious” people see themselves as sentient beings and animals as not and themselves as created in the image of God and animals as not. They are stewards of the land and of the fishes and the animals. Animals to them are for consumption and recreational killing opportunities” If god made non-humans for our consumption, why didn’t he just create them in the form of sausage, corned beef or chicken McNuggets. Does he enjoy watching animals suffer?
