Besieged by the Fires of Denial — Fort McMurray Blaze Overwhelms Anzac, Shuts off 640,000 Barrels per Day of Tar Sands Production

The simple fact of the matter, a fact that many invested in a destructive oil industry do not want to now face, is that a fire whose early-season extreme intensity was fueled by human-caused climate change is now doing what Canada would not. It is shutting in oil production in the tar sands — one of the highest carbon fuels on planet Earth.

Increases in fire frequency due to climate change

(Increases in fire frequency due to climate change as predicted by model runs are illustrated in the map above. According to a report at WeatherUnderground — “A large increase in fires over much of the globe is expected as we move through this century. Using fire models driven by output from sixteen climate models used in the 2007 IPCC report, researchers found that 38% of the planet should see increases in fire activity [due to climate change] over the next 30 years. This figure increases…

  1. My thoughts and concerns are with the native wolves, bears, forest bison and other native beings in the area. I hope they will survive and benefit from this magnificent, cleansing fire. If they and the rest of us are lucky, this fire will grow and grow and sweep the satanic tar sands destruction and the people who perpetuate it, off the earth.

    • And the people I am referring to above are those leaders of the lying, filthy oil industry and their servants in the Canadian government who initiated this assault on Alberta’s boreal forest wilderness and keep it going. They belong in a fiery hell.

  2. Thank you, Robert for your comments, my thoughts, exactly. That terrible Tar Sands –a symptom of Homo sapiens’ planetary destruction–should burn down. I suppose the remaining boreal forest up there is burning as well? My concern is also for those poor non-humans–I hope they can escape somewhere, if anything is left for them.

    • And thank you, Rosemary. I just was carefully reading some excellent posts on your for animals.org link. So good. Are you active with this group? It is incredible and sickening how powerful the enemies of wildlife and wildlife protection are. We need revolutionary change to protect wildlife and wild nature.

  3. I’ve been reading posts by people who justify working on the massively destructive tar sands assault on Alberta’s boreal forest wilderness by using the reason: it’s about “feeding my family.”
Here is some other work where people would use that same term, “feeding my family” to justify what they do:
    • drug dealer
    • mafia hit man
    • government wolf killer
    • corrupt politician
    • Canadian seal pup killers
    • Japanese & Icelandic whale & dolphin killers
    • African elephant and rhino poachers
    • public land destroying federal welfare cattle ranchers
    • factory “farmers” that imprison pigs in gestation crates or chickens in giant, airless indoor torture chambers
There’s lots of ways that people “feed the family” that should just stop, including filthy, destructive tar sands.
